Verizon is bringing 500 new jobs to their northeast Richland County call center

Corporate officials say the 500 jobs will be added at a rate of about 40 a month over the next year to the call center in Elgin.

One of the reasons is because of the addition of Verizon's version of the iPhone for their customers.This month, Verizon will add Apple’s iPhone to its line of smart phone products. Previously, the iPhone had been available only with AT&T’s wireless service. Verizon is anticipating heavy demand and numerous new users as as result.

The company employs more than 1,500 people in its 24/7 call center operation. Verizon moved from Forest Acres out to its new $40 million facility on Spears Creek Church Road in 2010.

The starting pay for these jobs will be $27,000.  Verizon offers medical benefits to employees as they start and has a partnership with Strayer University to provide collegiate education on its campus. It was important to a high-tech company such as Verizon to offer an educational option to its employees, May said.

        The 7th Annual Polar Bear Plunge is scheduled for this Saturday, January 8. It will begin at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Park.  We're asking that Polar Bears participating over the age of 18 donate $10 to Children's Charities of the Midlands, and those participating under 18 donate $5.

Mungo Homes-Columbia SC new home builder donates to local charity

I saw this article about Mungo Homes here in Columbia SC. I thought I'd share it with you since you're interested in new homes around here.

In memory of their father, the late Michael J. Mungo, brothers Stewart and Steven Mungo recently donated $90,000 to the Columbia Free Medical Clinic.

 Dennis Coker, Executive Director of the Free Medical Clinic, said, “This is an incredible, incredible gift and we’re very thankful.  Healthcare is important and the homeless and less-fortunate should not go without.”

 Coker explained that every dollar donated generates $8 for services, so the Mungo’s substantial gift will provide more than $700,000 in healthcare.

Established in 1984, The Free Medical Clinic provides quality healthcare, at no cost, to those who cannot pay for such services and who have no health insurance. The Clinic provides primary care for indigent patients from Richland and Lexington Counties, but also from 18 other counties.  Services are free of charge due to the efforts of dedicated volunteers and faithful financial support from the three area hospital systems, corporations, organizations, the United Way of the Midlands, churches and individual donors in the Columbia metropolitan area.

The Columbia Free Medical Clinic is located at 1875 Harden Street.
